Tropical crabs can make a fascinating addition to a freshwater tropical aquarium providing you follow the simple guide below.

Behaviour

In the wild, crabs are predominantly scavengers which means they are opportunistic feeders - eating almost whatever and whenever they can. Crabs should not be kept with vulnerable tank mates. For example, snails should be at least 1.0 inch in diameter. Do not keep crabs with small fish, slow moving fish or those with long flowing fins. If in doubt keep a close eye on your crabs for a couple of weeks after introduction - a small torch after lights out will help you see what they get up to at night!

Water Quality

The water conditions for crabs are similar to any other freshwater invertebrate. Crabs will not tolerate prolonged periods in water that has high levels of ammonia or nitrite. For these reasons, crabs are best added to established aquaria of no less than 6 months old.

Aquarium Environment

The aquarium lid should be tight fitting as all crabs can climb - even up the thinnest band of silicone! Most aquatic crabs do like to come out of the water to ‘sun bathe’ under artificial light tubes. To create an area for them to do this, simply drop the aquarium water level by 4 inches and place some tall rocks / aquarium decor in the tank so they can climb out of the water. A cut piece of cork or polystyrene also serves as a good floating raft - but don’t forget they need to be able to climb onto it!

Temperature

The temperature range for tropical crabs is between 20-28 Degrees Celcius, with a preferred temperature of 24. To prevent shell erosion, the pH of the water should be above 7.0 and no higher than 8.5.

Feeding

Crabs should be fed a varied diet, predominantly meat based. The mixed premium pellet selection is a great way to give a varied and balanced diet to your crab.

Crabs should be given a regular calcium supplement to ensure healthy and strong exoskeleton growth. SnailStrong Liquid Calcium will ensure your crabs will receive enough of this mineral in the aquarium.

Crabs will shed their exoskeleton as they grow bigger - it is common to mistake a shed skin for a dead crab! Crabs will often eat their old skin to replenish lost minerals.
